Sensory play

What is sensory play?

Children from an early age naturally use their senses for learning about the world around them especially through sight, touch and taste.

Learning through the senses can help in later life, as adults especially with problem solving and critical thinking.

Why is it important?

Sensory play is known to build nerve connections within a child’s brain. This can support their development to enable them later on to complete more complex learning challenges. This is important as during the first three months of a babies life 2 million Neural connections are created in their brain every two seconds!

Sensory play is any type of play that engages one or all of the senses and allows children to explore and investigate using their senses.

Some of the benefits of Sensory play are;

  • Supporting language and communication development
  • Social development
  • Supporting children to develop their fine and gross motor movements.
  • Cognitive development and problem solving skills.
  • Building nerve connections in the brain.
  • Supports mindfulness
